Overview

A family-first learning and storytelling platform for children aged three to thirteen, built around a character called Luno. Children get curious conversations, stories, and gentle adventures; parents get the controls. The product has two front doors — a Kids Mode and a Parent Dashboard — and a child cannot reach the first without a parent having come through the second, since initial sign-up is a parent action by design.

Challenges

Open-ended conversational AI and small children are a bad combination by default. The appeal of a companion that will talk about anything is exactly the risk, and the standard mitigation — filter the output, block the bad words — is the wrong shape for a three-year-old, because it treats safety as something applied after the fact to a system that will otherwise go anywhere. The product also spans an enormous developmental range: what a three-year-old and a thirteen-year-old each need from the same companion is barely the same product, and the person who has to trust it is neither of them.

Solution

Move the boundary from filtering to curation, and hand it to the parent. The site's own framing is the design: you curate the world, and technology brings it to life inside it. Safety becomes a property of what the child can reach rather than a check applied to what the model says, which is a far stronger guarantee and a far easier one to explain to a parent. The two-mode split makes that concrete — the dashboard is where the world is defined, Kids Mode is where it is inhabited — and gating entry behind a parent sign-up means there is never a session nobody has authorised.

Conclusion

Safe by design, governed by you is a claim most products in this category cannot actually make, because they bolt safety on downstream. Putting the parent upstream of the experience rather than in a settings screen beside it is the whole architecture, and it is the reason the promise survives contact with an open-ended model.
